Whole Child Development
We believe that developing a set of general competencies and a positive mindset underpins academic success as well as happiness and personal growth. Developing children as effective learners requires paying attention to developing their attitudes, skills, strategies, and behaviors as well as their content knowledge and academic skills. Nexus balances academic demands with an emphasis on growing good citizens. We help our learners to become self-aware and to develop the skills for good decision-making.
There are three frameworks for developing competencies and mindsets in each of the three curricula. The Nexus Neuron, Personal and Transferable Skills (PaTS) and the IB Learner Profile.
These frameworks are are explicitly taught and assessed to make them conscious and further help develop independent, self regulated learners. The three frameworks are overlapping and developmental. For example we teach learners about resilience across all three phases but in Primary we talk about co-operation and in Secondary this develops further to be collaboration.
Intrinsic Motivation
You may be surprised that, unlike some other schools, we do not give rewards such as house points or stickers to reward effort. Rather we want to develop intrinsic motivation which involves learners engaging in a behavior for it’s own sake because it is personally rewarding. E.g. solving a problem because you find the challenge fun and interesting. That is not to say that we do not celebrate success or have events that encourage competition such as Sports Days, inter-school competitions, maths challenges and talent shows.
Not students but learners
As learning is the focus for everything we do children at Nexus are referred to as learners. Furthermore we emphasise that our teachers develop a learning focused relationship “a relationship between teacher and learner, where both the teacher and learner want to work together and know how to work together on the learning“. (Absolum 2008)
The learner’s role in the relationship is only to learn. The learner focuses on “what has to happen that will best help me to learn?” The teacher’s role is only to help the learner learn. The teacher focuses on “what do I need to do now that will best help this student to learn?”
In order to promote a culture of respect throughout the school there is a joint responsibility of care for all staff members towards the learners and at Nexus we follow the principles of Restorative Practice.
Restorative Practices are based on principles that emphasize the importance of positive relationships as central to building community, and involves processes that repair relationships when harm has occurred.
This culture of respect is also specifically taught through the Personal Goals in Primary and through the Personal and Social Development programme in Secondary.
Mentoring and Guidance
In the Primary school, class teachers are responsible for the well being of all the learners in their class. In the Secondary school learners have a form tutor who supports and guides them as they progress through the school. Some learners have an academic mentor who supports them on an individual basis. Further pastoral support is provided for learners and parents by the Mile Post Leaders in Primary and Phase Leaders in Secondary along with the respective Heads of School.
Counselling
The two school counselors are an integral part of NISP and together they provide(s) pro-active character development programmes for all individuals as well as social-emotional counselling. Our aim is to enhance and support the intellectual, social and emotional growth through a caring and balanced environment, as well as provide social-emotional counselling for learners who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. The Counselors also communicate(s), co-operate(s) and collaborate(s) with teachers, parents and other professionals to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to achieve school success.
Parents as Partners
We are firmly of the view that there are three groups of people involved in educating young people: teachers, parents and the wider community. At Nexus we have a very active Parent Association and we regularly invite parents to attend workshops run by staff. These workshops are designed to help parents understand our learning philosophy and values so that they can better support their children at home.
“Embracing Diversity, Challenging Minds”
We believe that children benefit from diversity and that all children deserve an excellent, child-centered education. At Nexus you will see learners working together and caring for others in a supportive environment in and beyond the classroom. The world is not homogenous and our learners develop a deep empathy and understanding for difference.
Our inclusive (non-elitist) admission policy means that learners are widely varied in their abilities, skills and needs. In order to develop the varied gifts and talents of our learners, the learning journey itself is inclusive. We do not agree that simply including learners physically in the classroom is enough.
Differentiation
We can expect that some learners will be working on skills at Mastering level (A*) and others at Pre-foundation (G). Therefore we design the learning experiences, using a range of differentiation strategies, to ensure all learners achieve their best and are challenged appropriately.
The use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction.
Additional Support
Specialist teachers work in class alongside teachers to give additional support for children with language and/or learning needs. At Nexus we believe that an individual’s intellectual and personal growth are both complementary and inextricably linked and we do all we can to help learners develop their confidence and achieve their personal best.
Technology use is part of how we work at Nexus, but it does not define how all learning is delivered. We encourage our teachers to think about how to use technology effectively, so that it enhances engagement and the learning experience. Across the school technology integrators guide teachers and work with learners in lessons to embed technology to deepen the learning experiences.
Overall, we use technology in three ways:
Apple Distinguished Educators and Google Educators
Our teachers are part of a global community of education leaders recognised for doing amazing things with technology in and out of the classroom. They explore new ideas, seek new paths, and embrace new opportunities.
